Robot Stress - Acrylic Painting

This painting was inspired by my previous Robot Hand painting. My goal was to portray the human anatomy in robot form. I tried to take the anatomy a step further than my previous robot paintings by conveying different muscles and tendons. Additionally I wanted to express some time of implied emotion to the piece as well, but you can take from it what ever you would like.

The painting is 20" x 12" and 3/4" deep with white edges on canvas. If you are interested in purchasing this piece, it is for sale on my Shop. (https://www.etsy.com/shop/AtelierLambert)

Star Wars Space Battle - Acrylic Painting

I finished this painting about a month ago and I forgot to post it. This painting was inspired by my collection of Star Wars Micro-Machines and Rogue One. I have always been a huge fan of the space battles in the Star Wars. I often would fast forward through a lot of the other stuff just to watch them. I tried to incorporate a few new details from the movies such as "Blue Squadron". The film had not come out yet on DVD so I tried to get the Blue Squadron details as best as I could from the Rogue One trailers. I always wondered what a Star Destroyer hanger looked like, I tried my best to find reference. I should have waited a month or so because I just got caught up on Rebels and they seem to show Star Destroyer hangers often.

I started this project before I moved across state lines. For a long time it was just a star less sky with some sketchy fighters. I tried to put the fighters into groups with wing-men and such. I've been working with acrylic paints more lately just for the sake of drying time. One of the things that annoyed me about this piece was the canvas' texture. I wish I would have worked on a smoother surface because it was sometimes hard to get detail work to not look feathery. In all it was a fun project!

If you are interested in purchasing the piece or any of my other work please visit my shop or shoot me an email (philiplambertart@gmail.com) if you have any custom artwork request!

Captain America - In Color

Last night I opened up Photoshop and started to tinker around with some of my old illustrations. I wanted to keep experimenting with different ways of coloring my work. This time instead of trying to be detailed I thought about trying out a more speedy process, and this is what came out of it. It's not the cleanest, but it gets the idea across. I probably will try to refine this process and make it look a little better it I use it again.

Additionally I was messing around with my new digital brushes (Kyle Webster Brushes) doing some water color style paintings. This was before I started my Captain America coloring, so I just took out the sky and placed it in the background of Cap. Things are getting interesting and I promise new art is in the works!

Lost in the Supermarket

Lost in the Supermarket - Art and Consumerism

Inspired by a strange mix of Impressionism and a song by The Clash, this set of works includes some of my very first paintings. Originally I was interested in having a small art show to display these, but as the years went by I lost interest in the works. To be honest, I have had no idea what to do with these paintings. I never felt they were worthless, more like a little lost in regard to their ultimate purpose.

The idea came to me after seeing the Impressionist at the Musee d’Orsay. I realized that much of the artwork they created was about the appreciation of small moments in time and celebrations of French Culture. Upon coming back from vacation I was inspired to paint, but I had some trouble finding subjects, so I went to the supermarket.

At first it started out as a tongue in cheek critic of American Culture, but it evolved from a joke to a semi-real study. I found myself painting still lifes of the supermarket aisles. I started to notice the colors; how they all competed for dominance and I found an odd appreciation of canned food and cheese. In all seriousness, I found myself appreciating the value of
being able to go to a store and have food available to purchase.

Soon I moved on to painting people in the stores. Most of the time I was too afraid to ask the customers and workers to take their photos so I moved on to painting people from advertisements.
Sometimes I had a pretty good idea of what I was trying to accomplish when painting these people. Other times I didn’t have a clear message, just some idea I thought was goofy. The idea was to use sensuality and go over the top trying to sell a product. The end result was pretty ridiculous seeing how I was pulling images and phrases out of the Sunday paper and Cosmopolitan magazine.

This series taught me a good deal about being an artist. I learned through trials and some big errors that as an artist you have a responsibility for your work and its message. Not that all work has to have a message, but just know what you are working with because sometimes it can be volatile. It is going to be seen by people and you are going to have to explain it. Be prepared to defend it and be prepared for people not to like it. Then get over it.

Most importantly, I learned how to put paint on a piece canvas. I’ll admit, some of these paintings I despise (mostly the ones with people in them, so like 50%), but if I had not created them, then I wouldn’t have learned anything. You can’t be so focused on making everything a home run. If you do you will be too afraid to even start. It’s ok to make crappy art, it’s how you learn.

In the end, I don’t really know what else to say about these paintings. Oh and they can be found for sale here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/AtelierLambert?ref=hdr_shop_menu&section_id=19727743

Totem Spirit Kitten

Hello again! Here is my latest work of art - "Totem Spirit Kitten"

This is the first painting that I have worked on in 2 years, and it felt great to be back at it again. The idea came after I made some ridiculous Wolverine poses for a new drawing. After laughing at myself, I noticed that I liked the composition and decided I needed to do something with it. Take what you will from the work, there is really no set meaning. I enjoy it more when people come up with their own meanings (most of the time they are better than my own).

Be on the look out for more art on the way. I've been busy studying so I've kind of fallen a bit behind, but I assure you new stuff is on the way. In the mean time, ENJOY!

Captain America Head

The past week or so I have been busy writing my comic and applying to jobs, but tonight I decided to spend a little time at my computer with some digital painting. This is my first attempt at trying to seriously paint anything in Photoshop. I guess the process is a little like painting a real painting, but a lot more forgiving with mistakes. I had fun experimenting. Enjoy!

Second Color Page

Here is the second page of colors. My goal is to create a complete work, while focusing more on learning how experiment. I'm less focused on creating the best work of my life and more focused on actually learning a new skill. I think I said the same thing twice. Digital painting kind of fries my brain. This is just a mock up, there is a lot of little things that are bad craftsmanship that I will fix later, but sometimes it's good to show people where you are with an artwork.

Comic Book Coloring

Where are the daily sketches? Well let me explain, this is what I've been doing.

I am trying my best to learn how to color comic books. I figure I have a degree in painting so I shouldn't be too far away from being able to make something decent. I must say it's alot of trial and error, but I am not doing this blind. A few months ago when I worked at Half Price Books I picked up a used copy of Imagine FX magazine. This issue is the holy grail for me, it's jam packed with coloring tutorials from the professionals. For years my colors have been flat when I digitally colored...not anymore!

BTW this is just a work in progress images should get better, in theory.
