Boba Fett Watercolor Illustration

As promised I painted in Boba Fett with my new watercolor set. I was really excited to put these to the test. I haven't really used watercolor that much but it wasn't too frustrating. I mainly tried to work in layers and doing washes of color. On another note, I've been reading James Gurney's: Color and Light and getting some inspiration. One of the things that I am taking from the book is to be more limited and thoughtful with the colors I am using.

Christmas came and went, which means that I received some new art supplies! Thanks family and friends! I'm starting to get settled into my new home in Florida and have time for trying out my new gadgets. So this is one of the drawings that I didn't get a chance to ink at the end of inktober. I wanted to take my time and enjoy the process with this one. I started out knowing that I wanted it to eventually be watercolor, so this is on watercolor paper. For Christmas I got some new Winsor Newton Series 7 brushes (size 0 and 000), aka extra fancy brushes that make fine lines. I was amazed how smooth and easy to work with they were. For the gun and some of the armor I used my quill pen and I am fairly happy with the results today.

The next step is going to be watercolor. I received some watercolors for Christmas that I am itching to use.

A Few of My Favorite Marvels

Hello again, it has been close to if not more than a week since posting last. I must say Inktober got crazy there at the end. I have been sitting on the last few sketches for a week now trying to get the energy to ink them. Come on it was Halloween and the World Series, what's a guy supposed to do. So this was technically Inktober Day 26's artwork.

I started this drawing as just a doodle on a sketch pad during work. Wolverine was the first character that I got down, then Spiderman, Captain, and finally Iron Man. I have drawn these characters so much that I didn't have to look at photos or reference in regards to their postures. So ultimately I felt good about that. When it came time to ink the drawing a few nights ago I realized that I had just drawn the characters and no background, so it looked like they were just floating around. I decided to draw a city.

I am trying to get better at spotting my blacks. This means finding those large areas of ink that are supposed to convey shadows or just conveying a dark colored object. I've always had a hard time with this because after I made all the linework (think like a coloring book) I always assumed that I was finished. What I am finding is creating shadows with ink gives the drawing depth and makes the finished illustration more interesting.

Wonder Woman Commission Painting

And now for something completely different. This is a commissioned painting that I have been working on throughout the madness of October/Inktober. The client wanted a piece that showed action without a villain fight scene. I wanted the piece to have some story to it so I included Themyscria, Wonder Woman's origin island. Additionally the client wanted her costume to look like the one depicted in Batman V Superman but with more color. Also I wanted her to look a little more muscular and the actress looked in the movie. What's awesome is that it just so happens to be Wonder Woman's 75th anniversary, so yay for Wonder Woman! And finally, Bob Ross was on as I painted the background...trade secret, that ones for free.

Inktober Day 25 - Superman

Today's word was "tired" and boy do I feel it. So I decided to draw something familiar and fun, Superman. Last night I popped in the 1940s Max Fleischer Superman cartoons. I received them a year or two ago as a gift from my Grandmother who is always looking to help inspire my artwork. Well I'd say her gift was a success, because those old Superman cartoons are amazing! I love all of the detail that was put into the animation and world building. It is no wonder that these cartoons inspired the DC animated universe.

Inktober Day 21 - Thanos

Gradually catching up! So this is Thanos, he is pretty much the ultimate villain in the Marvel Universe. I say this because of the weapon he is known for wielding, The Infinity Gauntlet. The Gauntlet is made up of Infinity Gems, basically the doomsday items in all the Marvel movies. When these Gems are put together in the form of the Gauntlet, the user basically wields the power of a god. If you are interested in Thanos or the Gauntlet I suggest reading "The Infinity Gauntlet" saga or just wait for the next Avengers film.

As for the illustration, I really enjoyed using the sable brush on this. I tried something new today, instead of dipping my brush into the ink well, I poured out the ink in to a shallow bowl. Turns out I was picking up way too much ink and it was hard to control my line quality. Now I can see how much ink I am picking up. I decided to just ink in the background and leave his body without any shading so I could look at my lines.

Inktober Day17 - Darth Vader in Tie Fighter

Here is a illustration that I have been working on for the past few days. I can't say that I am really happy with it. I knew it was going to be a challenge to ink Darth with all of the black that is on his helmet. The next issue I had was finding reference for the inside of his Tie Fighter. After I inked in black the drawing looked really weird so I added some grey and red.

Inktober Day 16 - Godzilla

I am a day behind, but Sunday's magic word was "wet". So I made Godzilla, the original environmental activist. See Godzilla's not really a bad guy, he is just trying to protect us from pollution and alien threats such as King Ghidorah and Mecha Godzilla. To my understanding Godzilla was created after nuclear testing in the Pacific Ocean reacted with the remains of a dinosaur. Since then he has been a misunderstood reminded of natures power!

For this drawing I just stuck to my brush pens. Be sure to listen to the linked song when viewing, I know I was humming it the whole time I was drawing. Also check out Blue Oyster Cult - "Godzilla", ha ha it is great.

Wonder Woman

Currently I am working on a Wonder Woman commissioned painting. At the start of the project I created a few thumbnails to try and get used to the new film version of the her costume. This drawing was one of the thumbnails that were not picked for the painting. To be honest I am not a Wonder Woman expert, there are too many interpretations of her in different media. Maybe I am just not looking in the right place. Any way the painting should be completed in a few days and I will see if I can post it. In the mean time, this drawing was created using ink and these Japanese pens I got at the art store.

These are the pens that I used. I cant read what size they are so I always have to test them out. I am trying to work on my inking skills and learn as much as I can.

Admiral Ackbar Watercolor

I cannot get enough of Star Wars! I love all of the designs and alien creatures. Ever since I was a kid I have been obsessed with all of the little details. ALOT of my childhood was spent reading the Star Wars Encyclopedia. I am pretty sure I read that thing from cover to cover (and now ALOT of that is no longer Star Wars cannon....what am I doing with my life?). With these new movies coming out and listening to Star Wars Minute podcast from start to finish, I am in a Star Wars fever pitch! (P.S. if you haven't listened to Star Wars Minute Podcast you should! http://www.starwarsminute.com/)

So with all of that excitement and encyclopedic knowledge, I decided to start a new set of art work, Star Wars watercolors. I'll admit I am a newbie when it comes to watercolors and it takes a bit for me to get motivated to bring them out and practice...but that's where Star Wars comes in!

So for this painting I went with the ever lovable Admiral Ackbar. I started first with a pencil sketch, then moved on to the water colors. I tried my best to create a glazed layer effect by laying multiple levels of paint dry on top of each other. While laying down the watercolors, I pinched little bits of salt into the wet paint to create the sort of cloudy color mixes in the space backdrop. Finally I used my white correction paint and an old tooth brush to make the star patterns in the background. So that's it for this painting, but keep an eye out soon for more!

Dc Comics Aliens

Hey there! Long time no see! I've been super busy with alot of artwork over the past months and I am just getting around to sharing. I applied for the DC Comics Talent Search about a month ago. I should have those posted soon!

Here is today's drawing, featuring three of my favorite DC Comics heroes. Superman, Martian Manhunter, and Hawkman; all of which happen to be aliens. I was inspired by the idea of them teaming up. Maybe they were illegal aliens or something and the government is coming down on them. In some ways I feel like Hawkman and the Martian don't get as much attention as other DC heroes. I guess maybe it has something to do with a convoluted story lines. I'm not exactly sure why, but I feel like they have a wealth of story potential and really cool personalities! Anyway here's the art.

I tried to push myself with digital coloring this time around. I'd like to become good enough to color my own work, but I've still got some more work to do. I couldn't decide which version to pick, so I will leave you with three. Enjoy!

Storm Sketch

Here's the latest. My sister is staying over and working on some art so I figured I'd make some of my own. Sorry for the picture quality, I made this one in a sketch book so my scanner didn't pick it up correctly. So this photo is from my phone.

Continuing my work on the female form, I decided to draw Storm. She a member of the X-Men. I don't think I need to explain her powers, kind of self explanatory. Enjoy.

Marvelous Women

It's been awhile! My absence has paid off though. I finally finished courses and earned a web developer certification. We shall see how that goes, but you're not here to hear about all that! All you need to know is that I'm back in the saddle. Let's get to the Art.

Recently I decided to work on some of my weak points. I have been studying architecture, cars, and the woman form. All stuff that kinda psych me out. None of which really are as difficult as I've made out in my mind. More drawing of that stuff soon, but for now here are the women!

The first drawing I will share was created today. I have only had time to create the pencil work, but look for some ink soon. The goal what to study the female form and try not to get so much of a superhero or supermodel form. I am more interested in challenging myself to draw diverse body types with women, instead of just having a go to form. I was using some cheap sketch paper that I bought second hand at work. It has a tendency to smudge, so I prettied it up as best as I could. This is Captain Marvel by the way. Ms. Marvel has superhuman strength, the ability to fly, and can shoot out energy beams. As for her history, I'm even a little confused on it sometimes. If you are really interested I would suggest reading her introductory comics written by Chris Claremont.

Here is the second drawing. This was done back in January, I know I've been a little late getting this one out. Just as before I was focusing on the female form yadda yadda. I don't think I mentioned this but I used a very helpful reference site for both drawings (posemaniacs.com). This drawing was created on bristol board with pencil. The character is names Phoenix. She was one of the original X Men. She was telekinetic and telepathic powers. She also was possessed by an alien energy thing called the Phoenix force, which took her over and then she died. Then she came back, then she died. I see a pattern here...

Projector Bot

Hey there! Here is my first work of art for my digital portfolio. I think only one person guessed what it was from the little snippet I showed. Anyways here is the complete thing. I was inspired by a sketch I created a few years back. I am not sure how useful this thing would be but maybe it has a CD player and can follow you around with your life soundtrack or something.

It took me about a week to complete. This is one of my first digital paintings and my goal was to try and push the realism as much as I could. My digital skills are not the greatest yet, but I am sure that I'll getter better and faster with time. Sorry to cut this short but I have to get to my day job! Enjoy!

Retro Iron Man

Here is a drawing that I have been waiting to complete for a few weeks, I have been a little busy lately. This is Iron Man, or at least what he looked like in the 1980's comic books. If you are unfamiliar with the origin story of Iron Man, you probably should pick up the 2008 movie titled Iron Man. Please do, I'll wait...

Ok so for this drawing I started out with a rough sketch in pencil and then scanned it into Photoshop to finish off some of the designing. I originally had the character straight, but decided to tilt him counter clockwise in order to give the drawing a more dynamic feel. While still in Photoshop I changed all the pencil lines into blue lines, so that after inking I could use the magic of Photoshop to make them disappear. For this inking process I used a quill pen although I normally try to use brushes exclusively. The benefit of this is that a pen tends to give a more steady and less organic line, which is perfect if you are drawing something metallic or man-made. Here's the drawing and I'll have some more soon!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Birthday

Hello again, today I would like to share a drawing I made for my Nephew's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle birthday. On a side note, along with the drawing I gave him the new Ninja Turtles action figure set, just as any awesome Uncle should. To tell the truth a few months back I grabbed a set for myself, what can I say guilty habit, but it goes a little further than that when it comes to the Turtles. My love of the Turtles runs deep.

 

Some of my earliest memories are of singing the original TMNT television song and being in awe of all the figures in the toy aisles. I was a Turtle fanatic, I even had the Ninja Turtle pajamas! The Turtles were a big thing in the early 90's from 1990 movie to the awesome video games like Turtles in Time. It's good to see the the Ninja Turtles being brought back for a new generation and done right.

Back to my nephew, it's really awesome when you can bridge a generation gap and really connect with a kid. There's nothing like arguing with a kid over which superhero is the best. I mean look at him, Leonardo suit (the BEST Turtle) and a Rocket Raccoon? One awesome kid. Anyways the drawing was created with ink. More art soon. I like Turtles!

Batman Arkham Asylum Style

I decided to do a quick sketch on my day off work. This is just a pencil sketch on relatively cheap newsprint paper. I started randomly drawing the upper body then moved into filling out the rest of the figure. It is kind of unproportional, so I've cropped off the hands, it kind of makes it look better...trick of the eye sort of thing.

Anyways this is Batman, I think we all know who is so I don't have to give my usual trivia facts here. I tried to hint at his suit having little creases in it where his armor or pads link up. This is more or less his costume from the popular Batman Arkham series games. I have never played them but I have watched other people play them. Seriously, I don't play games anymore I just watch other people play them on youtube. Until next time!

Rocket Raccoon

This weekend I was lucky enough to see Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, a fun film about a group of heroic space bandits. It is one of the less known and outwardly bizarre Marvel franchises. The team consist of a human, an assassin, a man bent on vengeance, a talking raccoon, and a talking tree named Groot. While some of the characters have been around for more than twenty years, this incarnation of the team was first published in 2008.The film itself is one of the best times that I have had at the movies in awhile, and I highly recommend it to anyone, even if you are not a fan of superhero films. The music is great too! Enough about the movie, now about this little raccoon guy.

This is Rocket Raccoon. Don't let his furry looks fool you, he is a trained killer and weapons expert with a bad attitude. I'm not too sure how spoiler-y I should get here, so if you want to find out more see the movie of wikipedia. This is just a pencil drawing, hopefully I can get a inked version up soon.

Donatello Marker Sketch

Here's a quick sketch I've created while waiting to get sleepy. This is Donatello, he is the tech-savy Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. I have drawn the Turtles a few times lately, I guess I like how colorful they are. I use a sepia toned brush tip marker and Prismacolor markers. The sketch paper really helped soak up the colors and allow for some layering of hues. I am not too worried about the presentation of this piece, due to it just being a sketch so I chose to leave it uncropped. I'll probably be doing some more of these little sketches so be on the look out.

Some Superhero Heads

Here are some head drawings from my sketch book today. I wanted to work with my Pentel Color Brush which is like a sable brush but in a pen. I find that it has better quality lines and more versatility with line weights. For the colors I used my Prismacolor markers.

The two heads I decided to draw were Michelangelo, one of the Ninja Turtles and Daredevil. I tried to keep the details to a minimum and focus on the color at the end. There is a pretty big smear on Mikey because I was too impatient to wait for it to dry before erasing. Enjoy!
