Wonder Woman Commission Painting

And now for something completely different. This is a commissioned painting that I have been working on throughout the madness of October/Inktober. The client wanted a piece that showed action without a villain fight scene. I wanted the piece to have some story to it so I included Themyscria, Wonder Woman's origin island. Additionally the client wanted her costume to look like the one depicted in Batman V Superman but with more color. Also I wanted her to look a little more muscular and the actress looked in the movie. What's awesome is that it just so happens to be Wonder Woman's 75th anniversary, so yay for Wonder Woman! And finally, Bob Ross was on as I painted the background...trade secret, that ones for free.

Inktober Day 25 - Superman

Today's word was "tired" and boy do I feel it. So I decided to draw something familiar and fun, Superman. Last night I popped in the 1940s Max Fleischer Superman cartoons. I received them a year or two ago as a gift from my Grandmother who is always looking to help inspire my artwork. Well I'd say her gift was a success, because those old Superman cartoons are amazing! I love all of the detail that was put into the animation and world building. It is no wonder that these cartoons inspired the DC animated universe.

Inktober Day 24 - Jango Fett

This is Jango Fett from Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones. He is a Bounty Hunter, father of Boba Fett, and he gets his head chopped off by Mace Windu. I don't really have much to say about this one except he is a cool dude.

Inktober Day 23 - Speed Demons

This illustration depicts one of my favorite episodes from Superman: The Animated Series. The episode is titled "Speed Demons" and is about Superman and The Flash competing in a charity round the world race. This was one of the first episodes that brought in another hero from the DC Comics Universe. In my opinion Superman: The Animated Series is the definitive version of Superman for me and one of my favorite memories from childhood. I have just finished season 2 of CW's The Flash and I was wanting to draw Barry Allen aka The Flash.

I had to bring out my copy of The Human Figure in Motion by Muybridge for this illustration. I get really frustrated when I draw people running and it helps to have some photos to look at. Additionally I am not so sure I am happy with the drawing as a whole, but I am falling behind!

Inktober Day 22 - Luke Cage

I finally finished Luke Cage on Netflix this weekend and I really wanted to draw the character! The show is amazing by the way. So this is Luke Cage aka Power Man, he is a Hero for Hire. When I was younger I really heard nothing about him, but eventually he was a playable character in video games and I was like who is this dude that just walks around in a T-Shirt? After working at a bookstore I got my hands on a reprint of Luke Cage's origin story and it was awesome. Since then I have a few "Power Man and Iron Fist" comics. His skin is impenetrable and he has super strength. I don't really want to say much more, just watch the series, it's great!

I needed to get this illustration finished rather quickly, so I stuck to my brush pens. Because I drew the pencils with line weights in mind, inking was rather quick. I liked how in the show his clothes had a tendency to become hole ridden, so I wanted to convey that and ricochet bullets.

Inktober Day 21 - Thanos

Gradually catching up! So this is Thanos, he is pretty much the ultimate villain in the Marvel Universe. I say this because of the weapon he is known for wielding, The Infinity Gauntlet. The Gauntlet is made up of Infinity Gems, basically the doomsday items in all the Marvel movies. When these Gems are put together in the form of the Gauntlet, the user basically wields the power of a god. If you are interested in Thanos or the Gauntlet I suggest reading "The Infinity Gauntlet" saga or just wait for the next Avengers film.

As for the illustration, I really enjoyed using the sable brush on this. I tried something new today, instead of dipping my brush into the ink well, I poured out the ink in to a shallow bowl. Turns out I was picking up way too much ink and it was hard to control my line quality. Now I can see how much ink I am picking up. I decided to just ink in the background and leave his body without any shading so I could look at my lines.

Inktober Day 19 / 20 - Alpha Flight

Whew this one took a lot longer than I thought it would. I really wanted to do these characters justice and include as many team members as possible. The two word's were "flight" and "squeeze". So it was Alpha Flight and "Tempted" by Squeeze...not really. I just figured I'd squeeze two days into one drawing.

So this is the Canadian super hero team Alpha Flight. I really enjoy reading their old comics and the first showed up in one of my favorite X-Men story arches. The team in this image is comprised of The Guardian, Puck, Snowbird, Northstar, Aurora, Sasquatch, and Shaman.

Inktober Day 18 - Escape from America (Snake Plissken)

So today's word is "escape" which made me think of Kurt Russell's character Snake Plissken from the films "Escape from New York" and "Escape from LA". Additionally tonight is the night of the final debate, which made me think of all of the people that stated they would move to Canada is Donald Trump wins the Presidency. I find that to be funny that people would do that, so I attempted to make light of it. As for the election and my views, I'll keep them to myself, but I will say that the way that that man talks about women infuriates me and I cannot respect that. Boom! I am done, enjoy the artwork!

Inktober Day17 - Darth Vader in Tie Fighter

Here is a illustration that I have been working on for the past few days. I can't say that I am really happy with it. I knew it was going to be a challenge to ink Darth with all of the black that is on his helmet. The next issue I had was finding reference for the inside of his Tie Fighter. After I inked in black the drawing looked really weird so I added some grey and red.

Inktober Day 16 - Godzilla

I am a day behind, but Sunday's magic word was "wet". So I made Godzilla, the original environmental activist. See Godzilla's not really a bad guy, he is just trying to protect us from pollution and alien threats such as King Ghidorah and Mecha Godzilla. To my understanding Godzilla was created after nuclear testing in the Pacific Ocean reacted with the remains of a dinosaur. Since then he has been a misunderstood reminded of natures power!

For this drawing I just stuck to my brush pens. Be sure to listen to the linked song when viewing, I know I was humming it the whole time I was drawing. Also check out Blue Oyster Cult - "Godzilla", ha ha it is great.

Inktober Day 15 - Momaw Nadon

This is Momaw Nadon, aka Hammerhead. He was one of the characters that you see for a split second in the original Star Wars movie Cantina scene. The word of the day was "relax", so I thought of one of the Cantina visitors relaxing with a beer.

Today I felt like breaking out the water colors. I started off with a simple sketch knowing that I was going to watercolor the majority of the details. I used watercolor paper and found that my brushes have a tendency to bleed on the paper so I switched to my brush pens. Luckily they were waterproof. I just used basic watercolors for the coloring.

Inktober Day 14 - World War 2 Heroes

I am gradually catching up! So the word of the day was "tree", which made me think of "three". So I have these model army men that I bought at the hobby store and I was going to draw three of them, but I wanted to draw four of my favorite ones instead to make a squad. Then I wanted to include my Sherman Tank model in there as well. And that is how art is made.

Inktober Day 13 - Cable

This is Cable from the X-Men. Honestly his whole history and power set are confusing to me. Also "Jay and Miles X-Plain the X-Men" podcast hasn't reached his history yet, so I am a little clueless about him other than some key points. To my understanding, Cable is the son of Cyclops and the clone of Jean Grey "Madelyne Pryor". Cable's real name is Nathan Summers, as a baby he was transported into the future where he became a warrior and time traveler. Sometimes he has telepathic powers and sometimes not due to his techno organic infection. Additionally he is a brilliant tactician. Thanks Wikipedia.

Inktober Day 12 - Rogue

I've made it back from moving my Fiance. Sorry I didn't get a chance to post these drawings! The 12th was Wednesday...and I drew Rogue from the X-Men. Her costume has changed throughout the years but I wanted to draw the first one she wore back when she was in the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Rogue is putting on her glove with a disgusted face because her powers absorb peoples memories, personalities, and super powers when she touches them.

For this illustration I used a little bit of everything. I used some watercolor pencils, copic markers, and ink.

Inktober Day 11 - Alanna and Zoey

Today I helped load up the UHAUL to move Alanna to Florida. I will be driving it tomorrow. Oddly enough today's word is "transport" so this worked out perfectly!

Inktober Day 10 - Luke and Yoda

Today was a little difficult for me to come up with an idea. The word to help me out was "jump". All I could think of was Luke jumping around the swamp with Yoda, so here you go. So I guess Luke is supposed to be training while Yoda rides around on his back. As a kid the Dagobah scenes seems to last forever, but now I am more appreciative of them for all the Yoda quotes. Plus I would totally like there if I could get past the snakes. Also plese forgive my photos this week, I am having to shoot them on my phone. I will replace them with scans when I return.

Inktober Day 9 - Andy Dwyer

"The pit, I fell into the pit, you fell into the pit, we all fell in to the pit" - Mouse Rat

In the words of Eddie Vedder "I'm still Alive". I am helping my Fiance move in the process of inktober, but that is not going to stop me! So Sundays word was "broken". I don't know why but I automatically thought of Andy Dwyer (Chris Pratt) from Parks and Recreation with his broken legs. Andy decides to take a short cut and falls into a hole in his backyard. This sets up the fatefully meeting of Anne Perkins, Andy Dwyer, and the Parks and Recreation team. It's a good show, if you haven't seen it, it is well worth the watch. Everyone is great in it but Chris Pratt steals hilarious in almost every scene he is in.

Inktober Day 8 - More Cowbell

Here is a drawing that I have been working up for the past few days. It is based on the Saturday Night Live skit about the Blue Oyster Cult. Will Ferrell is playing the cowbell obnoxiously as the others try and record "(Don't Fear) The Reaper". It's a classic and I love to watch it to see everyone try and keep in character as the skit gets crazier. The word of the day was "rock". My first thought was to draw The Thing, then Dwayne The Rock Johnson, then I started to think about classic rock.

For this drawing I stuck with my brush. I worked all day on a oil painting so I think my lines came out more loose and I'm not so sure how I feel about it. I tried to get everyone's personality into the drawing and I can say that at least I can tell who is who haha.

Inktober Day 7 - Indiana Jones

This drawings inspiration came from the word "lost", Raiders of the Lost Ark. Thinking about it I could have just drawn Lost the TV show or even 31 days of Lost the TV show art...it's late I'm tired. So this is Indiana Jones, he is running from a massive bolder. How that thing got up there and stayed since ancient times, no clue. Come to think of it Indiana Jones doesn't really make sense, why does he have to steal stuff and throw it into a museum?

Inktober Day 6 - Luke Skywalker

Whew! So today's word was "hidden" which made me think about how Luke and Leia were hidden from Darth Vader. So I wanted to draw Luke in his innocence. I was originally going to draw a droid or two in the design but I really started to like the simplicity of it all. After inking the Boromir with loose strokes I wanted to challenge myself with some tight controlled strokes. Next thing I knew I started to see a bit of a Japanese print feel going on so I just went with it.

Inktober Day 5 - Boromir's Last Stand

So sorry, I am a day late! Well better late than never! Everything was completed yesterday but the inks, I promise. So the word of the day was "sad". Which made me think of the end of "The Fellowship of the Ring", my favorite of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. The end always made me feel sad. Not only because Boromir dies, but in that it kind of had a feeling of the end of summer camp or vacation, where you all go your separate ways. Plus Gandolf the Grey is dead and then we get Gandolf the White who is just not the same...

So for this drawing I used my brush pens once again. I went crazy and just did whatever I wanted to be honest. I figure that is what Inktober is about, experimenting and creating.

Captain America - Somebody Get That Kid a Sandwhich

Today's special word is "hungry", which made me think of that line that Tommy Lee Jones says in Captain America The First Avenger, "Somebody get that kid a sandwhich." This of course is before Steve Rogers gets transformed by science into Captain America. Not 12 pm yet here in Texas!

For this drawing I originally had the idea to include skinny Steve Rodgers and have him be shadowed by the current drawing. I started drawing this out and then realized that I was subconsciously recreating this awesome Alex Ross poster I had seen and I really didn't want to be a copier. I left the brush alone on this one and used a pen. I like how it looks, I felt more freedom in translating my line work. Enjoy!

Inktober Day 3 - "Look Sir Droids" Stormtrooper

Today I have a Star Wars drawing featuring a Stormtrooper. This is the point in the movie where C-3P0 and R2-D2 crash onto Tatooine. These Stormtroopers are trying to find them and this dude comes into frame and yells "Look Sir, Droids!" Technically these are Sandtroopers, they have all this stuff on their back so they can survive on planets with harsh environments. I have a copy of the Star Wars encyclopedia and listen regularly to the Star Wars Minute Podcast, so I can keep these fun facts coming all day. I'll be nice and spare you, Enjoy!

Intober Day 2 - Hulk vs. Abomination

Day two and I am still here! Today's code word is "noisy", anytime anyone says that word now you have to scream and wave your arms around. No, that's Pee-Wee's Playhouse and this is Inktober. So the word noisy made me think of Hulk. Anything the Hulk does is noisy, plus I have been reading vol.1 of Peter David's Hulk run and I am loving it!

For this drawing I stuck with a smaller sable brush, a size 1. I have been trying to use a better made size 3 for a while because I watched Paolo Rivera ink and he said that you can get more variation in line with a larger brush. Unfortunately I do not have that kind of control yet, which means all my lines end up being super thick. I'll keep practicing but I'll stick to the small brushes for now. Enjoy!

Inktober Day 1 - Dwight

Happy October! October is also known as inktober, which is a 31 day challenge created to help artist get into making art daily. The challenge is to create one ink drawing for each day in October. We shall see if I can hold up to this. There are ALOT of things going on this month so I will have to plan ahead.

For the first drawing my brother sent me a idea of drawing Dwight with his pumpkin head. This is based on an episode of "The Office" where Dwight gets his head stuck in a pumpkin for a day. The inktober word of the day was "fast" so I decided to include this Pontiac Firebird.
